Cloth Napkins!

Yay for being “green”!! Awhile back a family friend e-mailed me and asked if I could make her a set of cloth napkins because she was sick of buying napkins every time she was at the store. So, I set out to find the perfect material in the right color. My mom liked the idea so much she wanted a set for our own house. In bright pink! I was excited to make those :) Now that it’s getting near the Fourth of July, she wanted red ones. I’ll show you how easy it is to be “green” AND stylish! (I apologize for the poor photo quality in advance!)

“Ingredients”:

1 yard of fabric of your choice (I used linen but that has to be ironed…)

an 18” by 18” square pattern (you can use a ruler to tape paper together)

an iron and your favorite ironing surface

scissors, pins, sewing machine.

Lay the fabric out on a flat surface long ways. Be sure to match up the bottom as much as possible.

Use straight pins to pin the square pattern on the fabric. Line the bottom up with the bottom of the open side of the fabric. Leave about an inch on the side so as not to use the selvage! :)

Cut out this pattern out three times and you’ll have six pieces for your napkins!

Use an iron to press each side under 1/4” and work clockwise. I found working in this direction helps the sewing machine not stick when you get to the corners when it comes time to sew.

After you have pressed down each side go back and press under 1/4” again and pin. Do this to all six pieces!

Simply straight stitch each side! Be sure to remove pins before you go over them with the machine! Do this on each napkin. When you reach the end do a few back stitches to make sure the thread will stay.

When they are all finished you can lay them out on your kitchen table with matching placemats for an awesome look :) Make them in every color, they are so much fun, so easy and great for the environment!!

Hope this helped!
